Government needs collective effort to support educational sector - Mensah

Accra, May 03, GNA – Mr Daniel Amartey Mensah, Municipal Chief Executive of Ledzokuku Krowu has said there was the need for all stakeholders to ensure that high standards of education in the society are maintained.

He said the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly (LEKMA) will continue to provide the necessary infrastructural needs and support the welfare of teachers.

Mr Mensah said this during a sod-cutting ceremony of the Municipal office complex for the Ghana Education Service in the Ledzokuku Municipal funded by the United States Agency for International Development and the Government of Ghana.

He said education brings change and drives development and that the Assembly since 2009 had made the provision of educational infrastructure one of its priorities and commits over 35 per cent of its resources towards improving educational facilities in the Municipality.

Mr Mensah said the Assembly had collaborated with government on the provision of exercise books, school uniforms and school feeding programme as well as the Assembly through its internal generated funds added 2000 pupil to the school feeding programme.

He said the number of people in the Municipality was increasing due to improved social facilities and that the trend however has had an effect on education facilities and the quality of education that the Assembly espoused for the youth.

He said the increase in population has resulted in large class sizes in the Basic Schools and this has affected discipline in the schools since teachers was unable to have full control over the pupils.

Mr Mensah thanked the United States Government for providing a grant of over 19 million US dollars to assist the government of Ghana to improve education delivery in the country and also thanked the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service for selecting the Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal as one of the beneficiaries for the grant.

King Odehekpakpa Odaifio Welentsi III, Chief of Nungua, said the Assembly was demonstrating the Better Ghana Agenda of government in the Municipality by improving the quality of education and the living standards of the people.

He said no nation could develop without putting education on top its priority saying “education is the foundation of every initiative carried by every nation.”

King Welentsi who is also the President of Nungua Traditional Council also took the opportunity to appeal to stakeholders in the educational sector to continue to support government initiative to improve the educational standards in the country and called on the Municipal Chief Executive to sack encroachers from the land of the old Cemetery of Nungua.
