Sunyani and Techiman Municipal Assemblies establish sister-city relationship

Sunyani (B/A) Oct. 13, GNA – Sunyani and Techiman Municipal Assemblies in Brong-Ahafo have established a sister-city relationship with the Tuscaloosa City of Alabama in the United States of America (USA).

Under the relationship, the two Assemblies wouldinitiate movesto attract investors, especially those in the agro-processing sector from Tuscaloosa to invest in the municipalities.

Mr. Kwasi Oppong-Ababio, Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Thursday, after he and Mr. Alex Kyeremeh, MCE for Techiman, returned from Tuscaloosaafter leading a delegation to thecity to signan agreement to seal the relationship in late August this year.

Mr. Oppong-Ababio said thatthe two assemblies would benefit from educational exchange programmesin whichstudents in Senior High Schools in the two assemblies would visit their counterparts in Tuscaloosa every academic year.

“Our counterpart in Tuscaloosa has also offered us a scholarship package whereby four university students, two each from the two assemblies wouldhave the opportunity to study at the Graduate level at a University in Tuscaloosa”, he said.

Mr. Oppong-Ababio explained Tuscaloosa City would later link Sunyani and Techiman Municipal Assemblies with similar sister-city relationships it had with Naroshima and Schondorf cities in Japan and Germany respectively.

He said during the visit to Tuscaloosa,business personalitiesin that country expressed interest inthe establishment of businesses in the two municipalities for the benefit of the two countries.

Mr. Oppong-Ababio expressed optimism that the relationship between Ghana and the USA would be strengthened for mutual benefit.

Mr. Kyeremeh, the Techiman MCE, said the two municipalities were on the right path in their quest to bring development to their people.

He expressed the hope that the relationship could generate employment in the two municipalities and citedthat the sister-city relationship between Tuscaloosa and Schondorf had led to the establishment of ML Mercedes Benz vehicle manufacturing and assembly plant in the city of Tuscaloosa.

Mr. Kyeremeh said thatthe two groupshad a discussion with the executives and members of Alabama State Chamber of Commerce and briefed them on economic potentials and business opportunities in Techiman and Sunyani.

He said thatthe relationship would also promote cultural exchange programmes between the city and the two municipalities.
