Police round up 21 drug peddlers in Accra

The Accra Regional Command has rounded up 21 suspected drug peddlers from various vicinities in the capital, for unlawful possession and usage of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. They are currently in police custody pending further investigations.

The suspected drug peddlers include Kofi Nyamekye, Aruna Moro, Yaw Feyi, Kwesi Mike, Benjamin Asare, Patrick Anim Addo and Isaac.

The rest are Okyere Robert Quayson, Ebenezer Mensah, Joseph Brown, Nii Okai Addy, Solomon Gaisie, Walter Mensah, Jonathan Tetteh and Kweku Manu.

Others include Kofi Asefua, Jesus Annan, Joe Sakyi, Kudjo Opoku and Kobina Opare.

The suspects, according to police sources, were flushed out from the hiding places in notable suburbs of the capital, including Achimota charcoal station, Odorkor Tipper, Dome cemetery, Kokomlemle, Alajo, Abeka-Lapaz and Free Pipe.

Briefing The Chronicle in Accra yesterday, the Accra Regional Police Monitors Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Theodore Hlormenu, said upon a tip off on April 20, 2011, at about 8:30 a.m., the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Rose Bio Atinga, and the Deputy Regional Police Commander, ACP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, together with the task force carried out an operation to flush out criminals from their hideouts in the capital.

He said upon the tip off, a team of Monitor Stoppers proceeded to the aforementioned areas where the suspects were rounded up.

'At Odorkor tipper, we arrested 9 suspects at a drinking spot. At the bar, a search conducted revealed that four gallons of Akpeteshie (local gin) was mixed with dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, which was being patronised by the nine arrested persons,' he stated.

Four of the suspected criminals, according to the police, were arrested in Kotobabi, whilst three were arrested at Alajo.

According to him, all the arrested suspects would be detained in police custody, whilst investigations are ongoing to unravel the motives behind their illicit activities.

He added that after investigations, the suspects would be screened and later processed for court to face the wrath of the law.
