Huawei Technologies (GH) S.A. Ltd, a Chinese telecommunication solution provider, has for the second year running supported President John Evans Atta-Mills' Christmas Encounter with 350 selected students across the country.

The support, which was valued at GH¢18,000, came in the form of bags, books, and other stationary for each of the 350 students.

The Presidential Christmas Encounter is an initiative by President John Evans Atta-Mills to encourage and reward well-behaved and disciplined students across the country. Thirty most disciplined and well-behaved students from each of the ten regions were selected and flown to Accra to interact with the President at the Castle. The 2010 edition of the encounter also included 50 students with disabilities. The move is aimed at encouraging good behaviour and instilling discipline in the youth.

Huawei Technologies (GH) S.A. Ltd, a subsidiary of one of the world's leading telecommunication service and solution providers, supported the first Presidential Encounter in 2009 by providing educational materials to each of the 300 students and pledged to support subsequent encounters. True to their word, Huawei again put smiles on the faces of the students by presenting each of them with educational kits at a ceremony at Accra Girls Senior High School in Accra.

The Public Relations Manager of Huawei Technologies, Mr. Harry Yuan, said Huawei had decided to partner the Government of Ghana in the initiative because the company places high premium on education.

“We undertake many social responsibilities programmes in our catchment areas, and we think education is a key factor in the development of both the individual and the nation. It is for this reason that we have decided to support each edition of the Presidential Encounter,” Mr. Harry Yuan said.

“We also want the children who have the opportunity to interact with the President to realize that everybody, including the corporate world, appreciates discipline and good behaviour. And we think any student who goes back to their school or community with a lot of educational materials on account of their good behaviours would serve as a role model to their peers,” Mr. Yuan added.

He said apart from the Presidential Christmas Encounter, Huawei was committed to helping in the educational sector. Some of the assistance, according to Mr. Yuan, included a donation of ICT equipment to Universities and other educational institutions in the country.

He noted that the success of every corporate entity hinged on the people within its catchment area hence improving the quality of lives of people was one of Huawei's core values.
