Ghana star Micahel Essien has missed out on a top Fifa award as he has been edged out of the inaugural Puskas Goal of the Year trophy.

 
Cristiano Ronaldo may have missed out on being named FIFA World Player of the Year - but he did pick up one gong at the awards ceremony. 

The Portugal star - who left Manchester United in a world-record £80million deal in the summer - pick up the inaugural Puskas Goal of the Year trophy.

Ronaldo lifted the award for his 40-yard rocket for United in the Champions League victory in Porto last season. 

He beat off competition from around the world thanks to his thunderbolt in the 1-0 win in his homeland.

'The truth is I didn't expect to win anything,' said Ronaldo. 

"But, for me, it's an honour to win an award. This is a very good moment for me.'

Goals from Emmanuel Adebayor, Michael Essien and Fernando Torres features on the shortlist.
