Kumasi, June 29, GNA – Authorities of the Serwaa Nyarko Girls' Senior High School (SHS) in Kumasi has appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES), corporate bodies and philanthropists to assist the school to build a science laboratory.
Madam Betty Oppong, the Headmistress of the School, said a well-resourced and equipped science laboratory was crucial if the school was to run science course.
She was speaking at the maiden Speech and Prize-Giving Day of the school in Kumasi at the weekend.
The event was on the theme “Enhancing Female Education through Better Infrastructure”.
Mad Oppong decried the high rate at which students in the school especially those in SHS One were leaving the school for other options because her school was not offering science-related courses.
Madam Oppong said in this era of globalization, science was not only relevant to girls' education but also in their creative abilities to enable them to overcome the challenges facing the modern-day woman.
She said she was not happy that in spite of the fact that the school lacked adequate infrastructure to facilitate academic work and its total development, Serwaa Nyarko Girls had in recent times made modest progress at the academic front.
The Headmistress said in the 2007/2008 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the school chalked 100 per cent pass and commended the teaching staff for their commitment to duty and the good work they did in ensuring that feat.
She thanked the GETFund for donating a 34-seater bus to the school.
