Arsene Wenger has backed Arsenal to progress to the Champions League semi-finals after drawing 1-1 at Villarreal in their quarter-final first leg. The Gunners fell behind but Emmanuel Adebayor's wonder strike earned a draw.

“Villarreal started stronger and put us in a difficult position but it was a great response,” said Wenger. “We took over in the second half and it puts us in a great position. We want to qualify at home and repeat the performance from the second half.”

Wenger watched Arsenal struggle in the first half as Marcos Senna's 30-yard thunderbolt gave Villarreal the lead and the half-time scoreline could have been heavier for the Gunners.

But Adebayor's wonderful overhead kick was just reward for their second-half display and Wenger once again praised the mentality of his young side.

“I am confident because of the quality we have shown added to the mental strength and desire we have shown,” added the Frenchman.

“This team has shown the whole season they are mentally very strong and when they have backs to the wall, these young players always find an answer.

“I believe we have created momentum. We are a very young team but are able to focus.

“We have shown with the consistency we have in the Premier League that we are able to concentrate every three days and at that age that is a big quality.”
