A special environmental and sanitation programme is to be launched in the Ashanti Region as part of activities to mark the 10th anniversary of the enstoolment of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as Asantehene.
Under the programme, schools and communities throughout Ashanti will undertake special clean-up and tree-planting exercises, a source at the Anniversary Planning Committee has said.
It said the programme was to encourage the schools and communities to ensure environmental cleanliness and promote afforestation.
The programme is being jointly initiated by the Anniversary Planning Committee and the Ghana Scholarship Beneficiaries Association.
A letter signed by Mr Collins K. Adusei, acting secretary of the committee, authorising the association to spearhead the campaign, was copied to the press.
Speaking to newsmen later, Baffour Akwasi Oppong, national chairman of the association, said the programme would also enable it to continue with its project of planting 100,000 tree seedlings, a project which was launched about three years ago to honour the late Nana Yaa Asantewa.
He congratulated Otumfuo Osei Tutu on his successful reign, and for championing quality education not only in Ashanti, but also in other parts of the country.
