Driver fined GH¢600 for killing a Police Inspector

The Kumasi Circuit Court I has sentenced a driver to a fine of GH¢600 for driving carelessly, knocking down and killing a policeman instantly.

Kwadwo Oppong pleaded guilty to the offence and he was convicted on his own plea and he will serve 24 months imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Regina Addo-Yobo told the Court presided over by Mr D. W. P. Amedior, that on December 19, 2008 at about 20:30 hours, Oppong, a commercial bus driver was driving from Kumasi to Agona with the bus loaded with passengers.

On reaching Tano-Odumasi on the Kumasi Mampong road, the driver, who overtook a taxi cab by using the opposite lane, collided with a motorbike being ridden by the Police Inspector; Christopher Kwadwo Abebrese, 55, killing him on the spot.

The body, which was deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for autopsy was later released to the family and after investigation, he was charged and arraigned.
