Awudu Mahama A man believed to be the ringleader of a robbery gang of ten, Awudu Mahamma, has been identified as the brain behind the Ecobank robbery that occurred in June last year at Madina in Accra.

Awudu who is believed to have been a protégé of Ataa Ayi, a notorious armed robber who is currently serving jail sentence in the Nsawam Medium Prisons, is also an ex-convict who together with his brother, Fatau Mahamma, was released some time last year after serving their jail sentences.

The two brothers together with three others, namely Sulemana Drogba, a Nigerian known only as Benin Boy, and another only known as Not Nice, according to the Accra Police Command, attacked the Madina branch of the Ecobank, robbed the bank of millions of cedis and in the process killed a police officer who was on duty that day.

The police have established that the broad daylight robbery which occurred on June 23, 2008 at 10am was masterminded by the two Mahamma brothers.

The police have established also in their investigations that Sulemana Drogba was the one who shot and killed the cop.

The gang is alleged to have been involved in several robberies within Accra and Tema including some robberies at the Ashaiman Depot in which they reportedly made away with GH¢50,000.

The gang is said to have been involved in a hotel robbery on December 9, 2008 and another on January 3 this year.

The police have announced a GH¢2,000 reward for anybody who will provide information leading to the arrest of each of the suspects.
