Government has secured a 68.98 million dollar loan from the African Development Bank for the improvement and expansion of sewerage and sanitation within the Accra Metropolis.

The project launched in Accra yesterday is aimed at replacing the current on-site human waste treatment systems with environmentally off-site treatment systems by the year 2020.

The Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Environment Kwadwo Adjei Darko put on record that the government component of the project is USD 8.6 million and should thus be viewed as a government initiative.

He commended president Kufuor on behalf of the chiefs and people of Accra for facilitating the Project initially to the dwellers of Accra and appealed to all beneficiaries to exercise a sense of decorum and responsibility in the use and management of the facilities.

The country representative of the African Development Bank, Dr Alieu Jeng put on record that the Project will still continue should the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government lose the reins of governance in the up-coming elections as per the dictates of the agreement which was signed in the name of Ghana.
