ER REGSEC Stops Awukugua Odwira Festival

By GNA -

THE Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC), has ordered the suspension of this year's annual Odwira celebration by the chiefs and people of Awukugua to ensure peace in the town.

A statement signed on behalf of Mr Kwadwo Affram-Asiedu, Eastern Regional Minister, also directed the Awukuguahene, Nana Asare Brempong, to put on hold a programme to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his enthronement.

It explained that the decision was taken at an emergency REGSEC meeting on Tuesday, following signs of possible violence during the celebration due to a protracted chieftaincy dispute in the area.

The REGSEC explains that its intention is not to mediate, but rather to ensure that peace prevails in the township, especially in this period of intense political activities.

It said that irrespective of the decision, the factions reserved the right to pursue any legal action that could abate the dispute and bring peace to the area.
