GNPC Workers Prevent Boss From Leaving Company's Premises

Workers of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation prevented their Chief Executive Officer from leaving the office premises in Tema on Wednesday as part of protests to demand the payment of their two-month salary. As at about 7 pm, the Chief Executive was trapped in his office while the workers sang at the main entrance of the company’s premises.

In an interview with JOYFM, a spokesperson for the workers explained that following a discussion between the local workers union, the Chief Executive and management, it was agreed that representatives of the workers union should go the Ministry of Energy in Accra to sign an agreement for the payment of their salaries.

Before leaving Tema for Accra, the Local union representatives warned the workers not to allow anybody to leave the company’s premises till they return. Since the workers had not heard anything from the Union representatives by 7 pm, they decided not to let the Chief Executive leave the company’s premises.

JOY FM’s further enquiries revealed that the Energy Minister and his deputy and other officials of the ministry were in talks at the Presidency over the issue. The GNPC has been plunged into serious financial problems following the alleged trading in derivatives by the former Chief Executive, Tsatsu Tsikata.
