The Tema Municipal Marriage Registry recorded 2,582 marriages this year as compared to seven hundred last year. Out of the number, 2,807 registered under ordinance whiles 475 had customary marriages. This was made known by the Municipal Registrar, Stephen Nortey, to Radio Ghana in Tema. He said the registry also recorded thirty divorce cases under the customary marriage this year as compared to twelve last year.
Mr. Nortey attributed the increase in divorce cases this year to misunderstanding between partners having children out of wedlock and lack of knowledge on how to solve marital problems when they occur.
Mr. Nortey advised the youth especially women be counseled before getting into marriage to prevent disputes which could lead to divorce.
He called on the elderly in society especially parents, to educate their children on marital problems and how to solve them to enhance peaceful co-existence.
Mr. Nortey said parents should also take steps to ensure that their children are matured before contracting marriages and desist from forcing them into marriage.
