Asona Royal Family of Agona Swedru announces death of yet-to-be installed chief

The Royal Asona Family of Agona Swedru in the Agona West Municipality has formally notified the Regent of Agona Swedru, Nana Kweku Essieni V, and the Swedruman Council of Chiefs of the passing of Nana Dr. Bright Oduro Kwateng, former Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government and Reintegration.

According to the Head of the family, Ebusuapanyin Kweku Essuon, Nana Dr. Bright Oduro Kwateng was selected about two years ago as successor to the late Chief of the town, Nana Kobina Aseidu Botwe II. He was subsequently introduced to the Nimfahen and the Regent, Nana Kweku Essieni V.

He explained that preparations were underway for his installation under the stool name Nana Okokodurfo Kojo Nyarko II, in accordance with tradition. However, in the latter part of 2024, he fell ill and was flown to the United Kingdom for medical treatment.

Addressing a press conference in Agona Swedru last Thursday, the Ebusuapanyin stated that the family received the news of his passing on November 4, 2025.

He further announced that the family has scheduled Tuesday, April 14, 2026, for the 40-day observation, which will take place at the AWMA A School Park at Otabilkron in Agona Swedru at 9:00 a.m.

Before his demise, Nana Dr. Bright Oduro Kwateng served as Chief Director at the Ministry of Local Government and at the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. He was also a lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration and contested for the position of National Chairman of the Convention Peoples Party in 2020.
