One of the two Ghanaian socialites arrested in the United States by the Federal Bureau of Investigation over an alleged romance scam, Jamal Abubakari, popularly known as “Arrangement,” has been remanded into the custody of the US Marshals Service pending further court proceedings.
The remand order was issued by Magistrate Judge William E. Fitzpatrick following Jamal Abubakari’s initial court appearance in the United States District Court on May 1.
His twin brother, Kamal Abubakari, also known as “Lancaster,” is reportedly expected to be released and deported after authorities indicated that he currently faces no criminal charges.
Court documents circulating online show that “Arrangement” appeared before the court where he was informed of his constitutional rights, the charges against him and the possible penalties linked to the alleged offences.
Contrary to earlier reports suggesting he had hired a Virginia based law firm for legal representation at a cost of $100,000, court records indicated that he was represented during the hearing by Federal Public Defender Lauren Rosen.
During the proceedings, Jamal Abubakari reportedly requested that the case be transferred to the Eastern District of Virginia for hearing.
Following the hearing, the court ordered that he remain in the custody of US Marshals pending his next appearance before Magistrate Judge Ivan D. Davis.
The twin brothers were reportedly arrested by the FBI shortly after arriving in the United States, where they were allegedly expected to collect $2 million connected to suspected fraudulent activities.
The pair became widely known on social media for displaying luxury vehicles, designer fashion items and large sums of cash online.
Authorities are reportedly investigating the brothers over alleged federal fraud offences, which could carry severe prison sentences if convictions are secured.
Their arrest has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with some users questioning why they travelled to the United States despite ongoing FBI crackdowns targeting individuals allegedly linked to online romance and financial scams.
Showboy, a Ghanaian socialite and musician, also reacted to the development, criticising the twins and suggesting they should have exercised greater caution.
