AMA to temporarily shut part of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue for emergency repairs

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced the temporary closure of a section of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue in the heart of the Central Business District (CBD) to allow for urgent repair works.

In a statement signed by Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs, on behalf of Chief Executive Officer Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the AMA revealed that the shutdown will begin at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and continue until 12:00 a.m. on Sunday.

The closure will affect the U-turn at Lava and the stretch between the Derby Avenue/Kwame Nkrumah Avenue intersection and the Selwyn Market Street/Kwame Nkrumah Avenue intersection.

According to the AMA, the decision follows persistent complaints and inspections that revealed serious depressions and potholes along the route. These deteriorations have significantly disrupted traffic flow and posed risks to both drivers and pedestrians.

Motorists are being advised to use alternative routes during the four-hour window and comply with traffic diversions that will be clearly marked and enforced.

To ensure minimal disruption and public safety, the AMA said it will erect directional signage and deploy personnel from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to manage traffic flow throughout the operation.

The Assembly further stated that once the urgent repair work is completed, paving will follow to reinforce the road surface and extend its lifespan.

“The AMA deeply regrets any inconvenience the temporary closure may cause and appeals to all road users and residents to cooperate as the Assembly works to improve road infrastructure, enhance mobility, and promote safer and more efficient transportation within the city,” the release added.

City officials are urging the public to stay informed and plan their movements accordingly during the closure period.
