Scores of basic schools in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region have marked the 2025 Independence Day commemoration with participation in the National Commission for Civic Education’s (NCCE) Constitution Game Competition.
The keenly contested event at Nkawkaw was on the regional sub-theme “A Fun and Interactive Approach to Civic Education.” The NCCE 2025 working theme is “Ghana’s Future: Our Collective Responsibility.”
Christian MA Junior High School was adjudged the overall winner, Nsuta MA “A” JHS picked the second slot, followed by Nkawkaw Presbyterian JHS for the third position, and Saint Cecilia JHS picked the fourth position.
The 2025 Constitution Game was organized by the NCCE Eastern Regional Directorate with support from all the 33 District Offices of the Commission, which forms part of activities to commemorate Ghana’s 68th Independence Anniversary.
Ms. Ophelia Nana Yaa Ankrah, NCCE Eastern Regional Director, explained that by engaging the youth in a fun and interactive manner, the Constitution Game has the potential to equip the next generation of leaders with a deep understanding of the 1992 Constitution.
She said knowledge and understanding of the tenets of the 1992 Constitution would enable the next generation of leaders to make informed decisions based on national interest and promote democratic values.
“The Commission, through the Constitution Game, also seeks to foster a sense of shared citizenship and national identity, encouraging pupils and students to appreciate the diversity and richness of Ghanaian culture.
“Empower young people to become active participants in the democratic process, exercising their rights and responsibilities to build a better future for themselves and their communities,” the NCCE Eastern Regional Director stated.
Ms. Ankrah urged stakeholders to support the commission in the execution of its mandate, stressing that “we must build the sense of civic responsibility in the youth, especially from the basic levels through secondary to the tertiary stage.”
The ceremony was attended by high-profile dignitaries from the district, including NCCE District Director and Staff, the Ghana Education Service Representative, Headteachers, and pupils from the various schools who participated.
Ms. Ankrah explained that the Constitution Game provided a valuable learning experience, promoting healthy competition, teamwork, and academic excellence.
The participating students received prizes and certificates of participation, acknowledging their efforts and achievements.
She stressed that each commission district in the region would organize Civic Clubs from at least four basic schools to participate in the quiz.
Ms. Ankrah explained that the concept of Civic Education Clubs forms part of a broader philosophy of the commission to ‘Catch Them Young’ and build the tenets of democratic and constitutional values and culture in them.
Ms. Ankrah explained that the constitution game seeks to equip pupils and students with a comprehensive understanding of the 1992 Constitution, its history, and its significance.
“Encourage Ghanaians to think critically about the Constitution and its application in everyday life, and urge the youth to become ambassadors of the Constitution, promote its values and principles in their communities, and inspire others to take an active interest in civic affairs, exercising their rights and responsibilities as citizens,” Ms. Ankrah stated.
