Stephen Ayesu Ntim, the National Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been appointed as the board chairman of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).

Mr. Ntim succeeds Joe Addo-Yobo, who has served in the role since 2017. The appointment was formalized on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, during a swearing-in ceremony led by the Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, at the ministry.

Expressing his confidence in Ntim’s leadership capabilities, Dr. Opoku Prempeh wrote on Facebook, “[The] National Chairman of my beloved New Patriotic Party, Mr. Ntim is not new to leadership and therefore, I have no doubt that he has what it takes to steer the NPA to achieve its objectives for the benefit of all Ghanaians.”

The Energy Minister further charged the new chairman to focus on key priorities such as strengthening regulatory frameworks, enhancing operational efficiencies, and ensuring that the NPA operates with the highest standards of integrity and accountability.

Who's Stephen Ntim?
Stephen Ntim has a long-standing history with the NPP, having been a member of the Danquah-Busia Club, which evolved into the New Patriotic Party in 1992. As a party veteran, he has held various positions over the years.

From 2001 to 2005, Ntim served as the National First Vice-Chairman of the NPP. Despite four unsuccessful attempts at the chairmanship position, he persisted and was eventually elected as the party's national chairman in 2022 on his fifth attempt.

In the 2018 contest for the chairmanship, Ntim placed second, polling 2,515 votes against Freddie Blay’s 3,021 votes. His eventual victory in 2022 marked a significant milestone in his political career.

As he assumes his new role at the NPA, Ntim’s extensive experience within the NPP is expected to be instrumental in leading the authority towards achieving its regulatory and operational goals.
