The Ministry of Interior has imposed a curfew in Sampa township of Jaman North District in the Bono region following recent chieftaincy disputes in the area.

A press statement issued on Thursday, April 18, and signed by Interior Minister Henry Quartey, said the curfew which takes effect from 4pm to 7am daily was based on advice from the Bono Regional Security Council.

The curfew will be in place until further notice as authorities seek to restore peace and security in Sampa township.

"Government urges Chiefs, Opinion Leaders, Youth and People of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their grievances into ensuring peace in the area,” read part of the statement.

A total ban has also been placed on the carrying of arms, ammunition or offensive weapons in the township within the curfew hours.

"Any person found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted," the Minister warned in the statement.

Residents will now have to stay indoors from dusk to dawn as security agencies monitor the situation following disputes that are said to have threatened law and order in recent days.

The imposition of the curfew is aimed at reducing tensions while efforts are made to find a durable solution to the chieftaincy issues through consultations and dialogue.
