Hon. Cletus Apul Avoka, a former Majority Leader in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government led by the late John Evans Atta Mills, has expressed profound disappointment over the resignation of his colleague, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu from his position as Majority Leader.

Mr. Avoka believes Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu could have exited his position in a more elegant and befitting manner.

The announcement of Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu's resignation came late on Wednesday, February 21, just before a crucial meeting with President Nana Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House in Accra.

However, Avoka, who is also a former Member of Parliament for the Zebilla Constituency, conveyed his dissatisfaction with the decision.

"I am hugely disappointed," Avoka expressed, emphasizing that the manner Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu exited could be a great disservice not only to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but to Ghana as a whole.

Avoka, who shares a close relationship with the former Majority Leader, referred to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as his brother and a close ally, noting that they served together on the lands committee during the third Parliament.

Avoka recalled their shared experiences during his tenure as Majority Leader in the 2009 Parliament when Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu served as the Minority Leader.

He said, “When I was the Majority Leader in the 2009 Parliament, he was the Minority Leader, and we shared a lot of experiences together. We built consensus together, and we passed very critical laws together.”

Expressing his opinion on the timing and style of the resignation, Avoka stated, "I do not think that given just about 10 months to the election and some acknowledgment for the exit, as he has decided not to contest the 2024 elections like myself, I do not think that this is the way he should exit, I think that he should exit in a more elegant and befitting manner."

The reasons behind Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu's decision to step down as the Majority Leader remain unclear.

However, shortly after the resignation, he was named as the 2024 Manifesto Committee Chairman for the Bawumia campaign ahead of the December 7, 2024 elections.
