The main opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) is calling on voters to kick out the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing it of staining Ghana's democracy with innocent blood.

The call follows the fifth anniversary of the deadly violence that marred the January 31, 2019, Ayawaso West Wougon parliamentary by-elections.

"The NDC calls on all voters in Ghana to stand ready to massively vote out the Akufo-Addo government which has stained our democracy with the blood of innocent Ghanaians," said the statement issued by NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey on Wednesday, January 31.

The opposition party recalled the heavily armed men deployed by the national security ministry opened fire on opposition supporters during a by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

Several people were left seriously injured in the violence which drew widespread condemnation.

While a commission of inquiry led by Sir Emile Short was set up to investigate, the NDC says the government has failed to implement its recommendations, leaving victims to continue to suffer injustice.

“The sad reality today however is that the government has refused to implement the recommendations of the Commission of Enquiry thus leaving the seriously injured and economically challenged victims to fend for themselves," said the statement.

The opposition party also accused the NPP government of killing eight more people to win the 2020 general elections.

The NDC stressed that Ghanaians should vote out the "insensitive Akufo-Addo government" at the next polls to bring an end to what it called the "darkness that has befallen our homeland."
