It's been almost 50 years since Ghana took delivery of its first jet aircraft, marking a major milestone in the development of the country's aviation sector.

Flashback to 1974, when Ghana Airways received two new Fokker F28 Fellowship jet planes purchased from the Netherlands.

A ceremony was held at Accra Airport to welcome the medium-range aircraft, the Ghana Facts and History’s tweet on Monday, October 30 read.

Colonel Peter Agyekum, who was then the Commissioner for Transport and Communications, announced the national carrier would use the new jets to expand its route network to destinations in the United States, Africa and Europe.

The acquisition of the Fokker jets represented Ghana's first move into the jet age.

It allowed Ghana Airways to retire its ageing propeller planes and fly passengers on faster, more comfortable flights over longer ranges.

However, Ghana Airways is no longer operational today, having ceased flights in June 2005 due to administrative and operational challenges.

The national airline struggled with mounting debts and failed to compete in the liberalized aviation market.

Meanwhile, the current Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, has vowed to revive the national carrier.

He assured Ghanaians that a new Ghana Airways will commence soon, helping more citizens fly and boosting tourism and economic growth.
