The Nigeria Police Force has announced the arrest of a man who was filmed firing an AK-47 assault rifle in celebration of the reopening of a market in Lagos State.
A viral video had shown the individual shooting in the air as onlookers cheered during festivities marking the resumption of trading activities at the Ladipo Market.
Reacting to the footage, police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi said in a tweet: "This has been sent to the Lagos state command for necessary action. We will identify the man with the AK47 and do the needful."
In an update, Adejobi confirmed that the man has been apprehended. "The man has been identified. The Lagos state police command will speak on it asap. Let's what for their reaction on the matter. I really commend the efforts of the CP on it. Excellent indeed. Thanks."
The unlawful discharge of firearms endangers public safety and is a criminal offence, said the police.
Promoting reckless and celebratory gun use, according to the force, also undermines ongoing efforts by the police to curb proliferation of illegal weapons in Nigeria.
