King Solomon asked for the sword to destroy Ghana to pacify the NPP and NDC

What is happening in Ghana today can be compared to the biblical story in 1 Kings chapter 3:16-28. This is a well beat up story so there is no need belaboring the point. The gist is a quarrel between two harlots over a baby: Each claiming to be the mother of the living baby.

King Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived decided to saw the baby into two equal halves, one half for each woman. Then the actual mother of the son yearning with compassion for her son, said: “O my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill him!”

Against this back drop let’s cast our minds few decades back and recollect how many times the NPP has felt cheated one election after the other but resorted to peaceful protests to draw attention to the unholy alliance between the Electoral Commission and the PNDC.

At this juncture, it is very important to point out that the fourth republican constitution was designed and promulgated to satisfy the whims and caprices of one man - Jerry Rawlings. As such the ill-conceived and questionable constitutional drafting committee undertook a project that was fraught with the elements of inevitable constitutional crises and failures years down the road to establishing a sound democracy.

So much power was given to the president, and to appoint a referee, a commissioner to officiate a game in which the president is a competitor. Pro democracy organizations like the Democratic Alliance of Ghana (DAG), The Revolutionary Front, The Movement For Freedom And Justice ( MFJ ) and many progressive organizations protested to no avail. The (P)NDC never planned to actually relinquish power and thought they could stay in power eternally. Now, being faced with swallowing the bitter pill they themselves manufactured they are now crying foul.

For the sake of argument, though there are striking differences, let’s hypothetically agree the presidential election results complain today mirrors that of 2016. The pleas of the NPP to Commissioner Afari Gyan to delay calling out the elections because they’ve detected a number of irregularities fell on deaf ears. On national TV, Afari Gyan advised them to channel their grievances to the Supreme Court. The NPP youth were dying to hit the streets but their wise leaders calmed them down and decided to go to the Supreme Court. The best outcome of the petition was, in a rare sign of judicial transparency in Africa the Chief Justice allowed the proceedings to be broadcast live on television and radio.

We all know the verdict. The opposition leader, Nana Akufo-Addo reacting to the decision of the Supreme Court said he was disappointed but accepted the verdict and urged his supporters to do likewise. "I urge all our supporters to accept the verdict - and in peace," he said. The exemplary leadership exhibited by Nana Addo diffused the tension that had gripped the nation and cleared the cloud of anxiety that was looming over the country.

Let’s fast forward to December 2020. The NDC leader, Mr John Mahama without showing any shred of evidence of having been robbed has repeatedly said he will not concede. What’s more troubling is he not calling on his supporters to eschew violence as Nana did in 2016.

Generally, Ghana is seen as a beacon of democracy in our region and respects the right of its citizens to embark on peaceful protests. The president, Nana Akufo-Addo himself was part of pro-democracy peaceful mass manifestations that were brutally crushed by the PNDC security and paramilitary outfits without any provocation. Even the dispensation of naked violence on peaceful protesters led by Nana Akufo-Addo did not elicit any response from the peaceful protesters, let alone set a piece of paper ablaze to cause unnecessary fear and panic.

We are hereby appealing to Mr. Mahama to show the world his evidence and advise his supporters to avoid provocative violent protests which might lead to wanton destruction of lives and properties.

History, the wisest king is watching, and if Mr. Mahama continues to dig in his heels, asking the king to divide the baby into two because he is not the rightful mother, he will be responsible for any bloodshed that ensues.

In the interest of peace and national unity, there is a stark difference between President Akufo-Addo and Mr. John Mahama - They are like day and night.

History will be the ultimate arbiter of truth.

Long Live Ghana!

Peace Be Still!!
