2020 WASSCE Performance Puts Akufo-Addo Ahead Of Mahama – Adutwum

Education remains a priority for Ghanaians as the country gears up for 2020 general elections, says the Deputy Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

He argues that the pivotal role of the Free Senior School (FSHS) policy coupled with the performance of the students in the recently held West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) put President Akufo-Addo ahead of his opponents.

Dr. Adutwum in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, argued that “What people are looking for is that, regarding WASSCE results, has something good happened, was there a positive outcome, do you maintain it or do you do something radically different? So you vote to protect what is there currently. They will vote for Akufo-Addo to protect the Free SHS policy,” he said.

“Because of our rush to politicise education. When you say that the double-track is such a terrible thing and will destroy the education system, and all of a sudden, the students write the WASSCE and the scenario is totally different, then you wonder how something you termed as bad produces positive results? When you are not careful and you politicise everything, it will blow up in your face,” he added.

Analysis of the recently released 2020 WASSCE results revealed that performances in Mathematics and English Language were the highest, recording 65.71 and 57.34 percent, respectively.

Social Studies and Integrated Science recorded 64.31 and 52.53 percent, respectively.

The data also shows that about 60% of the 342,500 candidates who wrote the WASSCE, representing over 200,000, scored between A1 and C6 in their best six subjects, including English and Mathematics, which qualifies them for tertiary education.

Excellent WASSCE results have shamed free SHS critics – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had earlier applauded the first batch of beneficiaries of the Free Senior High School policy for what he says is their excellent showing in the 2020 WASSCE .

“I am reliably informed that the WASSCE results of Aburi Girls Senior High School, and, indeed, of all 2020 SHS graduates, was extremely impressive. Those who claimed that the policy was not achievable must be very ashamed now. I will shelve that conversation for now, so we deal with it another day. I congratulate all students for their excellent performance,” he said.

“Indeed, the 2020 results of the WASSCE candidates is the only year in the past six (6) years that more than fifty percent (50%) of candidates who sat for the examination obtained A1-C6 in all core subjects,” he added when he addressed members of the governing New Patriotic Party and traditional rulers at Aburi, on day 2 of his 2-day tour of the Eastern Region.
