Multiple‑award‑winning Ghanaian musician Joseph Matthew has clarified that he is an Afrofusion artiste, not an Afro‑Gospel musician, despite long‑standing public assumptions about his musical identity.
For years, the UK‑based artiste has been widely labelled a gospel act due to the spiritual and inspirational themes in hit songs such as Blessed, The Name, Hallelujah, My Story, Nyame Ye, Fear No Evil, and Promise Land. In 2025, he further expanded his sonic range with Love In You, a reggae‑infused single that showcased his versatility.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with DJ Lordash on Hot 93.9FM’s Hot Weekend Jam, Joseph Matthew made it clear that his artistry goes beyond the gospel tag.
“I’m not a gospel musician; I’m an Afrofusion artiste. Afrocentric means you are fusing multiple styles, but the base of the music is African. It’s a combination of different genres rooted in African sound,” he explained.
He added that “gospel” is a message, not a musical genre.
“The word ‘Gospel’ means ‘Good News,’ but I’m not a gospel artiste. The message can be found in any genre — you can do Hip‑hop or Highlife and still deliver a gospel message.”
Joseph Matthew stressed that restricting himself to the gospel category would limit his creative freedom. To drive home his point, he referenced mainstream acts like Shatta Wale and Sarkodie, noting that although they have released songs with gospel‑leaning messages, they are never boxed into the gospel category.
The Afrofusion star is gearing up to release his first single of 2026, titled Walk, on July 7. Industry watchers predict the track will spread rapidly across the music scene.
