A Nigerian human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, has raised concerns over the safety of an 18-year-old woman who was allegedly brutally assaulted by her husband, following a visit to her at a hospital in Isolo, Lagos State.
According to Gwamnishu, the young woman, who recently became the subject of a viral video showing signs of severe abuse, pleaded with authorities not to arrest her husband despite the alleged assault.
In a statement shared after his visit, the activist disclosed that the victim appears to be emotionally attached to her alleged abuser, making the situation more complicated.
“I arrived at the hospital in Isolo, Lagos State, where the young woman who was brutally assaulted pleaded with us not to arrest her husband,” he stated.
Gwamnishu also commended social media user Michigabbi for standing by the victim and fighting for justice despite having no personal relationship with her.
He further revealed that information gathered so far suggests that the recent incident was not the first time the teenager had allegedly suffered abuse at the hands of her husband.
“Unfortunately, she is just 18 years old, deeply attached to her abuser, and according to available information, this is not the first time she has been assaulted,” he added.
The activist said he has formally contacted the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) to intervene and provide the necessary protection and support for the young woman.
In a worrying development, Gwamnishu disclosed that even members of the suspect’s family fear for the victim’s life if she remains in the relationship.
“The husband’s sisters told us that if the girl refuses to leave their brother, he may eventually kill her,” he revealed.
The case has sparked widespread concern on social media, with many calling for urgent intervention from authorities and support organizations to ensure the safety and well-being of the young woman.
Domestic violence advocates continue to stress the importance of reporting abuse and seeking professional help, noting that victims often remain in abusive relationships due to emotional attachment, fear, financial dependence, or psychological manipulation.
Authorities are yet to provide an official update on any possible arrest or legal action regarding the case.
