Cristiano Ronaldo's attempt to make himself Portugal's penalty hero cost his nation their chance of Euro 2012 glory, it has been claimed.
Ronaldo's international team-mate Nani says the Real Madrid star had to take their fifth kick in the semi-final shoot-out defeat to Spain.
Taking number five could have seen him hailed as the player who clinched Portugal's place in the final. The La Furia Roja would go on though to win 4-2 on penalties and deny the Madrid star making history with his side.
Nani, who took and scored Portugal's third penalty has revealed that Ronaldo demanded to play the last penalty while he was not the least bothered about any particular order.
Portugal coach Paulo Bento has though revealed that he spoke to Ronaldo after extra time, and agreed to let him to take the final spot-kick.
The misses by Joao Moutinho and Zenit St Petersburg denied Portugal the chance of making it to the final for the second time in three European competitions.
Portugal lost to Greece in an unbelievable final to Greece when she hosted the competition in 2004.
