AIPS announces training programme for young journalists

Accra, Jun. 8, GNA – The International Sports Press Association (AIPS) has launched a training programme for young journalists to attend the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Azerbaijan later in the year.

Gianni Merlo, President of AIPS, who announced the initiative when he paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Information, Fritz Baffour on Friday in Accra, said the idea presents an opportunity for young journalists to have an experience of international competitions.

He said the Young Reporters' Programme, which is open to journalists within the ages of 18-25 will have a participant from each of the 16 countries qualified for the final tournament scheduled from 22 September to 13 October in Azerbaijan.

The AIPS President recalled that a similar programme was organized on the sidelines of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Games held in Shenzhen, China last year drawing over 30 participants.

The Information Minister highlighted the significance of sports as a tool for national development.

Fritz Baffour also reiterated Government's commitment to the development of lesser known sports to get the recognizing as football does.

Merlo would serve as the Guest of Honour for the 37th MTN-SWAG Awards Night scheduled for Saturday, June 9 at the Banquet Hall, State House, Accra.

Also in town for the event are Mitchell Obi (Nigeria) and Evelyn Watta (Kenya), both members of the Executive Committee of AIPS.

Over 25 sports men and women drawn from several sporting disciplines would on the Night receive trophies, medals and certificates among others for their efforts in the year 2011.

The topmost award, the 'Sports Personality of the Year Award' has Andre Dede Ayew, Ajara Mohammed and Harrison Afful as the competitors, with Andre Ayew, Emmanuel Agyeman Badu and Harrison Afful also vying for the 'Footballer of the Year Award'.
