The Ashanti Regional Police Commander has enlisted 500 men as reinforcement as part of its preparations to ensure maximum security during the Ghana 2008 tournament and to ensure that criminal activities are brought to the barest minimum.

An additional 200 men to be in plain clothes have also been recruited to join the CID while 40 senior officers have been re-designated to effectively supervise security for the teeming soccer fans expected to troop into the country to witness the continental event which takes place in less than two weeks.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, (ACP) Seth Charles Oteng, acting Ashanti Regional Police Commander who announced this at a press conference in Kumasi said Police Personnel in Brong Ahafo have been put in readiness as a reserve team.

“Our resolve is to ensure that no criminal takes undue advantage of fans coming from other parts of the world to watch the tournament” he assured.

ACP Oteng warned criminals to let go of their diabolical plans, since the Police will fiercely resist them if they made any attempt to short-change the people.

The Acting Commander called on taxi drivers to be wary of questionable characters who might engage their services and endeavour to report them to the Police.

ACP Oteng also admonished cab drivers to desist from cheating the visitors who might not be conversant with the new currency whilst also advising those who have not as yet embossed their vehicles at the KMA to do so without delay.

The Acting Commander entreated the general public to cooperate with and assist the police patrol teams to reduce criminal activities by calling 191 on MTN to report any criminal activities.
