African Football Gurus For Media Conference

Sports journalists in Ghana will engage some of the biggest names in African football in an important brainstorming conference on Wednesday at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel ahead of the draw for the 2008 African Cup of Nations tournament which comes off on Friday.

Corporate bodies such as Nestle Ghana Ltd, Progeny Ventures Incorporated, Ataala Ltd and Sikelele Health Care, the Hackman Foundation, Grafitec and ATL are sponsoring the day's workshop that will bring together sports journalists and African football heavyweights like CAF President Alhaji Issa Hayatou, the CEO of South Africa 2010 World Cup LOC, Mr Danny Jordaan, the CEO of Ghana 2008 LOC, Dr Kofi Amoah, and the Minister of Education, Science and Sports, Prof. Dominic Fobih.

The conference, which is being facilitated by Plus-1 Media and the BBC World Service, will serve as an effective platform to help raise journalistic standards with a view to influencing positively coverage of the MTN 2008 African Cup of Nations tournament in Ghana.

It will also provide a unique platform for sports journalists, editors, producers, administrators, trainers and policy makers to assess themselves and share ideas on how to raise standards in sports journalism in Ghana and Africa in general.

Mr Jordaan, who is one of the principal speakers at the conference, is expected to make a plea to the African media to focus more on upcoming events on the continent after Ghana 2008, the most notable being Angola 2010 African Cup of Nations, South Africa 2010, and the potential for the Commonwealth Games to be brought to Africa in 2014 via Abuja.

According to the organisers, special awards will be presented to some prominent sports journalists, organisations and other distinguished individuals who have helped in the development and promotion of African football.

A former Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Mr Edward Osei Kwaku, will receive a posthumous award, with others like Alhaji Sly Tetteh (Dedication to Football Development in Ghana), Mr Kwabena Yeboah (Three Decades of Quality Sports Reporting in Ghana), Nestle Ghana Limited (Fifty Years of Sports Sponsorship in Ghana).

Other award winners are Ms Fousena Djagba, Mr Talal Fattal, BBC Fast Track, Ghana National Supporters Union, and MTN.
