General News Government Should Empower The NIA And Relevant Institutions To Save The Cost For Conducting Population And Housing Census—Manhyia North MP
MAY 1, 2017 LISTEN

To have credible and up-to-date National Population Database for Ghana, there is the need for President Akufo-Addo’s Government to fully resources the National Identification Authority, Birth & Death Registry and the Ministry of Local Government & Rural Development.

The success of NIA predominantly depends on the accurate Data from the Birth & Death Registry and Ministry of Local Government.

Population has to do with Natality Rate and Mortality Rate but currently the Birth & Death Registry in charge of these important exercise is at the state of collapsing. The Birth & Death Registry is poorly resources and unable to serve the purposes it was instituted for.

In accordance with the best standard practice, the Birth & Death Registry must have direct linkage to the Birth and Death Records of all Hospitals across the Nation as well as records from the various funeral homes. But this can be achieve by fully resourcing the Birth & Death Registry. The Government should establish District branches for the Birth & Death Registry in addition to refurbishing the Regional branches and the National Headquarters of the Birth & Death Registry.

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has to be resources by the Central Government to complete the Streets and House Naming Project.

The effective and efficient functioning of the Birth & Death Registry and the MMDCE’s would help the NIA to become the cutting-edge referral centre as far as the Country’s Population Database is concerned.

The NIA should be empowered to take over the conduct of the Population and Housing Census from the Ghana Statistical Service. This initiative will help the Nation to save the cost for conducting Population and Housing Census in every 10 years.

Since the NIA will be conducting the continuous collection of National Database on Population and Housing in the Country, there will be no need for the Ghana Statistical Service to conduct the Population and Housing Census in every 10 years.

The up-to-date Database of NIA will serves as a referral point of call for the State Institutions such as National Population Council, Electoral Commission of Ghana, NCCE, DVLA, NHIA etc.
