Accra, Oct. 20, GNA - Mr Michael Paa-Quecy Adu, the outgoing President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has stated that his outfit only recognises Julian Mawuse Cobbinah as the newly constitutionally elected President of the Union.

Mr Paa-Quecy Adu said the NUGS did not recognise any other person as elected President for the 2016/17 academic year and had therefore described Luqman Abubakari, a member of the union as an 'imposter'.

He was speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday in response to recent media reports on a purported division of the NUGS over the presidency of Mr Abubakari and Mr Mawuse Cobbinah.

He noted that the NUGS organised an election at its congress early September conducted by the Electoral Commission elected and new executives for the 2016/17 academic year;

Mawuse Cobbinah as President, Mabel Serwaa Acheampong as Treasurer, Andrews Adjei as Coordinating Secretary, Elorm Hubert Adehokey, Financial Controller, Betty Adjoa Eshun, Women's Commissioner, Isaac Nyame as International Relations Secretary.

The rest are Yeboah Nana Etwi Amankwatia as Projects and Programmes Secretary, Sarpong Kenneth as Press and Information Secretary and Anthony Kwado Baah as the National Youth Authority Representative.

Mr Adu explained even before NUGS held its election, a presidential candidate had declared himself as the president of NUGS making it strange to the Union.

He said NUGS was unhappy about the situation at hand and had therefore pleaded with the media to regard Mr Abubakar a 'fraud' as he tried to make himself unconstitutional leader of the union.

'Before NUGS congress could even begin, Luqman encouraged by detractors of the union appointed himself as president because he lacks the courage and temerity to stand for a competitive election,' Mr Adu said.

The NUGS President noted that upon noticing the imposition of Mr Abubakari and his colleagues as executives of the union, the steering committee informed the Criminal Investigative Department of the Police Headquarters and were currently handling the case.

Mr Paa-Quecy Adu has therefore urged the public and the media to refrain from regarding Mr Abubakari as NUGS president because he was only able to pull four votes from the total votes casted at the congress held at Hohoe, from September 5 to September 9.

Mr Abubakari was arrested by the police at Adesawe Studio at TV3 in Accra when he and some 'macho men' attempted to abduct one Mr Cobbinah upon invitation to the station's news @10'.
