By United Nations - African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID)

EL FASHER (DARFUR), Sudan, March 30, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Joint Special Representative (JSR) Ibrahim Gambari regrets statements attributed today to the North Darfur Government and other parties on recent events in Kabkabiya, alleging that UNAMID had a role in the deaths of civilians during a local dispute between the locality commissioner and residents over the relocation of a market place.

UNAMID has confirmed that it did not attempt to harm any member of the population during the demonstrations in front of its camp this past Tuesday and Wednesday. Seven UNAMID peacekeepers were injured when protestors tried to force entry into the UNAMID compound.

During a visit to Kabkabiya yesterday, the JSR offered his condolences for the loss of life as a result of the clashes between the national security forces and the population, and offered UNAMID's mediation support to resolve the conflict between the locality and the population. UNAMID is sending a multi-disciplinary assessment mission to Kabkabiya shortly. A joint investigation with the Sudanese authorities will also be conducted.
