TWO YOUNG men from Kukuom in the Asunafo South District of the Brong Ahafo Region are currently in police grips over their alleged involvement in the circulation of some fake currency notes.

Twenty-four-year-old farmer Alfred Kumah and his 23-year-old accomplice, Emmanuel Asare, a driver, were arrested by the Kukuom police on September 27, 2011 after they allegedly used fake cedi notes to buy some items from a shop.

The police have since retrieved a total of 14 different denominations fake cedi notes bearing similar serial numbers from the two suspects.

According to the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Commander, DCOP Robert Ayalingo, the police have launched a full-scale investigation into the case to find out where the suspects printed the fake currency notes and possibly retrieve the printing machine, noting that the suspects were in police custody helping in investigations.

He said the first suspect, Alfred Kumah, on the said day sent one Sofo around 4:30pm with a GH¢10 note, bearing serial number RU2974704, to buy a canned malt for him from the shop of Kofi Asare, the complainant. Kofi Asare had left the shop in the care of his 13-year-old daughter. The money, he said, was later detected to be fake by the shop owner upon his return to the shop.

DCOP Ayalingo explained that at about 7pm the same day, Kumah sent one Rahida Mohammed to the same shop to buy a can of malt for him with a GH¢10 note with serial number ZR0354150, which was also detected to be fake.

He said when Rahida was questioned on how she got hold of the fake currency, she said Kumah sent her with the money.

When a report was made to the police, Rahida led the police to arrest Kumah and during a search on him, two GH¢50 notes bearing the same serial number, XB4432165, and one GH¢20 note with serial number VC9282824, all suspected to be fake cedi notes, were found in his pocket.

The police chief said upon interrogation, Kumah disclosed that the suspected fake currency notes were given to him by Emmanuel Asare. He then led the police to arrest Emmanuel Asare at his residence at Kukuom.

During a search in the room of the second suspect, one GH¢50 note with serial number XB4432165 and eight GH¢20 notes bearing serial number VC9282824 were found.
