President John Dramani Mahama is set to receive a briefing this week from the National Airline Taskforce he constituted to spearhead efforts toward re-establishing Ghana’s national carrier.
The meeting is expected to present a detailed roadmap outlining plans to restore Ghana’s presence in the aviation industry.
President Mahama said reviving a national airline would go beyond national pride, creating employment opportunities for pilots, cabin crew, engineers and other aviation professionals.
He made the remarks on Monday, April 27, during a ceremony at the Kotoka International Airport, where he arrived to cut sod for the expansion of Gate C1 at Terminal 3 and the construction of a new concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3.
“This week, I’m meeting the task force I set up to work towards the re-establishment of our national airline. I’m looking forward to receiving their presentation outlining the concrete roadmap for Ghana’s flag to fly proudly across Africa and in the global aviation space once again,” he said.
Ghana has been without a national carrier since the collapse of Ghana International Airlines in 2010, following earlier difficulties with Ghana Airways. Over the years, successive governments have made attempts to revive a national airline through partnerships with foreign investors, but these efforts have yet to materialise.
The absence of a national carrier has meant that Ghana relies heavily on foreign airlines for international travel, with implications for revenue retention and the growth of the local aviation industry. Industry stakeholders have consistently argued that a viable national airline could position Ghana as a regional aviation hub, especially given ongoing infrastructure expansion at Kotoka International Airport.
The latest initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Mahama administration to strengthen the aviation sector, improve connectivity and leverage air transport as a driver of economic growth and tourism development.
