Transport minister re-launches passenger rail service to boost connectivity

The Minister for Transport, Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has officially reactivated passenger rail services on the Takoradi–Kojokrom–Sekondi line, a move aimed at revitalising Ghana’s rail transport sector.

Speaking at a ceremony on Friday, Mr Nikpe stated the government’s commitment to improving transport connectivity, stimulating economic growth, and enhancing livelihoods. He mentioned that a reliable and efficient transport system remains crucial to national development.

The Minister disclosed that ongoing negotiations have secured an additional 8-kilometre rail line extension at no cost to the state, describing it as a significant gain for the sector.

He assured stakeholders that the inherited salary arrears owed to rail workers are being cleared to boost staff morale and improve service delivery.

Mr Nikpe reiterated the government’s plans to expand rail infrastructure to key mining areas, a strategy he said would facilitate the efficient movement of heavy cargo to ports and strengthen revenue generation.

He added that the relaunch of passenger services on the Western line builds on the success of the Tema–Mpakadan railway, which currently serves approximately 6,500 passengers weekly.

According to him, patronage levels on the Takoradi–Kojokrom–Sekondi line would be closely monitored to guide future improvements.

He stated, “The reactivation of the Western Rail Service is expected to ease road congestion, provide a safer alternative for commuters, and support economic activities within the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis and beyond.”
