The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced the restoration of two generation units at the Akosombo power enclave following last week’s fire outbreak.
The incident, which occurred at a Ghana Grid Company power control centre, led to a loss of about 1,000 megawatts of power from the national grid.
The disruption triggered widespread outages across the country, reviving concerns over dumsor.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, April 27, the Minister said the restored units have added about 280MW back to the grid.
"The first generation unit was successfully restored yesterday… the second unit has also been brought and is generating power," he said.
According to the Minister, a third unit is expected to be operational soon, contributing an additional 140MW to stabilize supply.
The Minister further assured that all six units at the plant are expected to be fully operational by the end of the week.
"This incident represents one of the most serious and unprecedented disruptions ever experienced in Ghana’s power sector," noted Dr. Jinapor.
Mr. Jinapor acknowledged the impact on citizens and businesses, expressing empathy for affected consumers.
He also commended engineers working on the restoration, noting their efforts under difficult conditions to restore operations within the shortest possible time.
Meanwhile, investigations have been launched to determine the cause of the fire, with both technical and security teams probing the incident.
The Minister assured the public that government remains committed to restoring stable and reliable power supply nationwide.
