A Kingdom, A Monarch, and A Moment for the Ages

"He does not belong to Ashanti alone. He is a national asset." President John Dramani Mahama

In the heart of Kumasi, the ancient seat of Asante royalty has never shone more brightly. On the evening of Friday, April 24, 2026, the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Jubilee Hall became the epicenter of international diplomacy and traditional grandeur, as a high-level Executive Gala was held to commemorate the 27th enstoolment anniversary of the Asantehene. Organized by the Diaspora Affairs Office of the Office of the President in strategic partnership with the E ON 3 Group, the "World-Meets-in-Ghana" gala celebrated the Asantehene's nearly three-decade reign under the theme "Advancing Peace and Sustainable Economic Development Through Royal Vision."

The event drew presidents and former presidents, diplomats and traditional rulers, captains of industry and members of the African diaspora all converging on Kumasi to pay homage to a man whose extraordinary legacy has earned him one of Africa's most distinguished reputations: Pillar of Peace.

The Man Behind the Golden Stool
Over nearly three decades, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has earned widespread respect for his quiet but impactful mediation in some of Ghana's most sensitive disputes, positioning him as a unifying figure both nationally and internationally.

Since ascending the Golden Stool on April 26, 1999, the Asantehene has quietly but decisively redefined what traditional leadership can mean in a modern African democracy. His reign has been characterized not by the ceremonial splendor of the throne alone, but by the practical, patient, and often thankless work of resolving conflicts that governments could not.

The Gold Coin: 24 Karats of Gratitude
In recognition of his contributions to peace, the Bank of Ghana gave approval to E ON 3 Group to mint a 24-karat Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Coin in his honor. The coin was officially launched at the Manhyia Palace on December 12, 2021.

The Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Medal is a significant statesman's honor reserved for leaders who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to peace, national cohesion, economic progress, and enhanced Ghana's standing in the world. At the April 24 gala, this coveted recognition was extended to a distinguished roll of Ghana's greatest political leaders.

The rare joint honor brought together President John Dramani Mahama, former Presidents Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and John Agyekum Kufuor under one royal canopy celebrating Ghanaian statesmanship, national peace and unity. Through the awards, Otumfuo sent a profound message that statesmanship is ultimately about service to the nation. By honoring them jointly, Otumfuo underscored that leadership is measured not by partisan victories but by enduring contributions to peace, prosperity, and national unity.

Other gold medals were presented to the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, Minister of Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr Johnson Asiama, CEO of Ghana Gold Board Sammy Gyamfi, and KGL Group Executive Chairman Alex Dadey, among others.

The World Arrives at Manhyia
The Special Guest of Honor was Her Excellency Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. His Royal Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri Kingdom in Nigeria, and Her Royal Highness Olori Atuwatse III, the Queen Consort of the Warri Kingdom, attended as Royal Guests.

The presence of Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey as Special Guest of Honor underscored the global reach of the Asantehene's influence. The organizers noted that this celebration holds profound significance, honoring a legacy that has been instrumental in fostering peace not only within the Asante Kingdom but across Ghana and the African continent.

The executive dinner ball was chaired by Sir Sam Jonah, one of Ghana's most respected global business leaders and Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast himself a recipient of the gold medal and a legendary figure in African mining and corporate leadership.

A Legacy Written in Resolved Conflicts

The title "King Solomon" did not come easily. It was earned stool by stool, dispute by dispute, across decades.

Otumfuo has successfully mediated numerous stool and chieftaincy disputes across Asanteman, many of which had remained unresolved for years. Among them was the Effiduase stool dispute, which had lasted 23 years before being resolved after seven sittings under his mediation. The Tepa stool dispute, which had lingered for 13 years, was resolved in five sittings, while the Adonten stool dispute, also spanning 13 years, was settled after eleven sittings. Other resolved chieftaincy disputes include those of Tafo, Bechem, Bekwai, Kokofu, Agona, and Kumawu.

In 2012, he convened all presidential candidates in Kumasi, where they committed themselves to peaceful elections by signing a peace pact known as the

Kumasi Declaration.
His most consequential national peace initiative the resolution of the Dagbon chieftaincy crisis spanned three presidential administrations. Otumfuo also served as the sole mediator in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict, holding a number of mediation sessions with the feuding parties at Manhyia Palace before submitting his report to President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House on December 16, 2025.

Economic Peacemaker Too
Otumfuo's peacebuilding transcends traditional disputes into the economic domain. President John Dramani Mahama acknowledged Otumfuo's instrumental role in supporting Ghana's economic stability, particularly in 2016 when the Asantehene facilitated discussions between the government and the International Monetary Fund that led to the successful negotiation of an Extended Credit Facility. Mahama stated: "That was the programme which turned the economy around, because in 2016, almost for the first time in our history, we did zero central bank financing of the budget."

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor recalled that Otumfuo facilitated Ghana's HIPC exit a development that led to the cancellation of Ghana's external debts totaling $4 billion.

Celebrated While Alive A Fitting Tribute

Sir Sam Jonah, Executive Chairman of Jonah Capital, captured the spirit of the evening eloquently when receiving the gold coin: "It is refreshing that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is being celebrated while he is alive. For far too long we tend to celebrate the dead and all the good things that the person did tend to be forgotten. He has achieved so much and celebrating him with the gold coin is in order."

The Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, on receiving the gold coin in October 2025, commented that Otumfuo's peace initiatives are well deserving of recognition.

A Monarch Who Speaks Truth to Power
Even as the world gathered to celebrate him, Otumfuo demonstrated that his role as a pillar of peace demands courage as much as patience. Just days before the gala, addressing a meeting of the Asanteman Council on April 20, 2026, the Asantehene issued a stern warning to government appointees regarding the misuse of political power to interfere in chieftaincy affairs. "Your government is in power, so you think you can do whatever you please. Know that power is transient," he declared.

By honoring a monarch whose influence spans peacebuilding, culture, and development, the World-Meets-in-Ghana gathering not only celebrated a milestone but also reinforced the critical role of unity and visionary leadership in shaping a stable and prosperous future.

A Broader Calendar of Celebration
The dinner ball also forms part of a broader calendar of events commemorating the Asantehene's 27th anniversary, among them the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Art Awards, scheduled for May 13, 2026, which will celebrate creativity and cultural expression while reinforcing the importance of the arts in national identity and development.

Conclusion: A Golden Throne, A Lasting Legacy

Twenty-seven years after ascending the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has become something no royal title alone can confer a genuine, irreplaceable force for peace in a nation that has needed it. From Dagbon to Bawku, from the HIPC negotiations to the IMF bailout corridors, from the Kumasi Declaration to the halls of the United Nations, the Asantehene has shown that traditional authority, exercised with wisdom, neutrality, and moral courage, is not a relic of the past.

It is, as the world saw at Manhyia Palace on April 24, 2026, the very foundation upon which Ghana's future can be built.
