The Ghana Police Service has taken swift action against one of its officers accused of assaulting a member of the public.
General Corporal Wise Bessey, who was stationed at the Takoradi District Police Command in the Western Region, has been interdicted pending an investigation into the alleged incident.
In a statement released on social media on Friday, February 2, the police service confirmed that "The Ghana Police Service has interdicted a Police officer, No 49187 General Corporal Wise Bessey, stationed at the Takoradi District Police Command, for an alleged assault on a member of the public in Takoradi in the Western Region."
The statement added, "The interdiction is to allow for a thorough investigation into the incident and the professional conduct of the Police officer in line with Police Service Regulations."
Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, according to the statement, has personally contacted the alleged victim to assure him of police assistance and a thorough probe.
“The victim has been contacted by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and, the IGP has assured him of the needed Police assistance and a thorough investigation into the incident," the statement said.
The police reiterated their commitment to accountability, saying "We would like to assure the general public that the Police will continue to ensure that professionalism is maintained at all times in the discharge of our mandate."
