Police arrests one over attack on Owusu Bempah’s church

The Police has arrested one person in connection with the recent violent attack on Rev. Owusu Bempah's Glorious Word and Power Ministries International church at Odorkor in Accra.

A statement from the police service said the suspect was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command at Odorkor to assist in investigations.

It however said the suspect has been granted bail and is to be reporting to the CID Headquarters.

The statement signed by the Director General of Public Affairs of the Police, ASP David Eklu, said it was worried over the trend of doom prophecies by some religious leaders about the death of some key individuals in society, noting that such utterances have the “tendency of breaching public peace and causing fear and panic in the country.”

The Police, therefore cautioned persons who make some pronouncements to be wary of the security implications.

It also urged the media to desist from publicizing such pronouncements to avoid being used as tools for destabilizing the country's peace and security.

Police also condemn any retaliatory acts by opposing factions and warns that causing harm, damage to property, rioting, threatening etc. is a crime. They disturb public peace. The public is therefore advised to report actions which are likely to breach public peace, or cause fear and panic to the nearest Police Station, the statement further added.

The founder and leader of the Glorious Word and Power Ministries International was recently in the news for predicting the death of some politicians, religious leaders and high-profile personalities including the Chief Imam, Sheikh Nuhu Sharabutu in 2019.

His prophecy did not go down well with a section of Ghanaians who issued a warning to Rev. Owusu Bempah to retract the prophecy or face their wrath.

They then stormed the church premises at Odorkor on Wednesday, wielding cutlasses and  vandalizing parts of the property .

Plastic chairs, an organ and some windows in the church building were damaged; an act condemned by the Chief Imam.

Speaking on Ekosii sen on Accra based Asempa FM on Friday; Owusu Bempah insisted that there was nothing wrong with his prophecies.

In some cases, he accused the media of twisting the prophecies to court public disaffection for him.
