Goaso, (B/A), April 19, GNA - Residents of Goaso in the Asunafo North Municipality have expressed optimism that the "planting for food and jobs campaign" would create "realistic jobs" and improve on the livelihood of the local people.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is in Goaso for the official launch of the programme.
The campaign forms part of efforts to generate more wealth in the agricultural sector and to improve livelihoods of farmers and fisher folks as well as help grow the national economy.
They told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in a random interview at the Nana Akwasi Bosomprah II park, the venue of the event that the expectations of the people to get jobs were very high.
According to the residents, most of the people in the municipality were into peasant farming because of the lack of working capital.
They explained that many of the unemployed youth in the area had the interest and desire to engage in farming as a commercial venture, but lack of support was a great challenge.
Mr Isaac Amponsah, a farmer at Goaso was hopeful that the programme would be executed devoid of partisan considerations.
Madam Agnes Adu Baah, a sachet water seller, was of the view that the programme would motivate the farmers with modern farm inputs and agro-chemicals for increased food production.
Master Osei Enoch, a student noted that because of the unpredictable weather pattern, there was the need for the government to provide reliable irrigation facilities for farmers.
Madam Rose Otu, another farmer at Goaso observed that without the support of traditional rulers the programme would not achieve success.
She called for effective partnership between the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the traditional authorities so that chiefs and queens would also play active roles towards the successful implementation of the programme.
Mr Kofi Oppong, a farmer from Debiso in the western region recommended an effective supervision and monitoring of the progranme.
