Northern Region Minister Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna has said he had the Tamale Regional Organizer of the NDC Gofred Wumbei arrested and detained because he assaulted him at his residency.

The minister claimed Mr Wumbei and his campaign coordinator wihout any provocation, came to his residency to assault him and had no option than to have them arrested Friday night.

The two were released on Saturday morning after irate youth of the NDC in Tamale besieged the Northern Regional police headquarters demanding their release.

Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna told Joy News that Gofred Wumbei, also known as yellow, and his campaign coordinator assaulted him and his bodyguard at his residency on false information that he the minister was campaigning for other aspirants contesting the Regional organizer position.

“I was in a meeting with Nalerigu –Gambaga executives discussing a petition sent to the Office of the President demanding the removal of their District Chief Executive.

"Around 6pm while still meeting, I saw that there were people struggling with my bodyguard and all of a sudden I saw one of them push to open the door and started banging the table in front of me and stretching his hands to slap me.

“…So quickly I called the police to come in and pick them to go and detain them.  I am in government residency having a meeting  and someone comes in  from know where to attack me. This is an assault, even if I was not a Regional minister and I was attacked in my own house I will still have taken this issue up” the Northern Regional minister said.

Alhaji Muniru also said Gofred Wumbei has since shown some remorse and has asked some chiefs in the Tamale Metropolis to apologize on his behalf to which he has taken in good faith.

He  added that the National chairman of the NDC Dr Kwabena Adjei who is on a campaign tour of the Region also met with him and condemned the conduct of the two gentlemen and called on him the Minister to let the party's internal dispute mechanism deal with the issue.

Reacting to the Youth that besieged the Tamale Central Police station on the night of the event, the Northern Regional Minister advised them to always take their time to verify the substance of any information before they react.

“Most of the youth who went out that night regretted taking those actions, some of them started calling and wanted to come to apologize and I said that is okay. They were misinformed but they should always do a sober reflection on any issue before they take action on them.”

In a related development a member of the election committee of the NDC in the Northern Region Rauf Khalid has disclosed that the party is set to hold its congress on Sunday to fill in vacant positions of Regional Secretary and Treasurer.

The two positions could not be contested for because of an injunction served on them by a member of the party Mohammed Aliu on the claims that he was unjustifiably disqualified in his bid to become Regional secretary.

Khalid Rauf said the legal committee of the party has taken advantage of the expiration of the injunction to hold the contest to fill in those vacant positions.
