Tarkwa (W/R), July 23 GNA - A Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced a Kwame Aturu to 18 months imprisonment for stealing 230 square meters of felt cable laid underground by Goldfields Ghana Limited (GFGL)to help prevent the spillage of cyanide into the soil.
The 20 year-old convict pleaded guilty to the offence.
Chief Inspector Edward Paddy told the court presided over by Mr Samuel Obeng Diawuo that the complainants are task force members of GFGL stationed at Samahu in the Prestea Huni/Valley District while the convict and two others, who are now at large, live in the same vicinity.
He said on June 30, the convict and his accomplices entered the GFGL mines concession at phase five and succeeded in cutting 230 square meters felt cable valued at GHȼ 493.81.
Inspector Paddy said on reaching the Glo mass pole site near Toyota motors on the Tarkwa-Kumasi road, a witness who saw the three carrying the cable to the road side, questioned them on how they got the item but none of them provided an acceptable answer.
He said the convict and his accomplices quickly loaded the cable on to a Hyundai Grace bus and conveyed it to unknown destination immediately the witness left.
Inspector Paddy said on June 13, the task force spotted the convict at Samahu arrested and handed him over to the police.
He said when the police conducted a search in his room another cable belonging to the same company was found concealed under his bed.
He said efforts are being made to apprehend those at large.
