Sekondi, Jan. 6, GNA - The Friends of the Nation (FoN) is supporting the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) to enact bye-laws to enhance the conservation and wise use of wetlands in the metropolis.

Mr. Donkris Mevuta, Executive Director of FoN, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Sekondi on Friday that FoN was supporting the STMA under the Hen Mpoano

Initiative, which primarily aims at protecting the coastal environment and conserving fish stock.

Mr. Mevuta said the bye-laws would especially focus on the Essei Lagoon, Butuah Lagoon and Whin River.

He said wetlands served as flood plains, allowed flood waters to flow into the sea and supported marine fisheries as most fishes breed in wetlands.

“Wetlands maintain human life, marine biodiversity and have tourism potential”, Mr.Mevuta said.

He said FoN was trying to build consensus among about 14 communities bordering wetlands about the manner and methods to adopt to conserve the wetlands.

This, Mr. Mevuta said, would ensure that the people accepted the bye-laws when they were enacted.
