Female Students organise Health Workshop in UE

Bolgatanga, Aug. 14, GNA - The Women's Commission of the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), at the weekend, organized a 'Health Workshop' for health promotion officers and the general public in the Upper East Region.

The Health Workshop, which was organised in collaboration with Better Health Management Ghana, a private health Promotion Institution, attracted resource persons from the Ministry of Health and Better Ghana Management Services Limited.

The topics discussed included personal hygiene, sanitation and sexually transmitted infections (STI), among others.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Regional Coordinator of Better Management Ghana Services Limited, in charge of the Upper East Region, Mr Daniel Darku underscored the need to ensure environmental cleanliness at homes and workplaces.

He noted that 40 per cent of the population worldwide, did not have ready access to clean and safe drinking water and that approximately 60 per cent did not have satisfactory facilities for the safe disposal of human waste, which he attributed to be the cause of diarrhoea, cholera and other water related diseases.

He advised the participants to strive for cleanliness at their various homes.

Participants were also urged to report to any health institution for help whenever they observe any signs of sexually transmitted disease.

Ms. Safia Sulemana, the Women's Commissioner of the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG) said her outfit was concerned about the development of women, who were most disadvantaged in society, saying that, it was the key reason why it organized the health workshop to educate them on health issues.

“The purpose of the workshop is to empower our women in the area of health, to enable them to create wealth towards national development”, she said.

She said the Commission was organizing entrepreneurship courses to help some of the young female students to be financially independent.
