Policemen Under Investigation For Extortion

The Police administration has instituted investigations into the conduct of two groups of police officers arrested for allegedly extorting monies from motorists at the Senchi-Adomi bridge and Ayi-Mensah barrier on April 6, this year.

The officers: Inspector Nyonator, Inspector P.K Akoeda, L/Cpl Eric Akatse, L/Cpl Adu Tutu all of the Akosombo Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) were said to have collected various sums of monies to the tune of GH¢108.

An amount of GH¢448, 30 also extorted from motorists and the general public was as well found in the possession of Cpl Joseph Daystar, L/Cpl Samuel Dogbey, L/Cpl Lawrence Konatia who were on barrier duty at Ayi-Mensah.

A statement issued by the acting Director of Police Public Relations, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Cephas Arthur, said the administration in pursuit of its image cleansing campaign had set up a special team made up of officials of the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) and other operational units to investigate the two incidents and submit reports to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) as soon as possible.

The statement reiterates the administration’s commitment to rid the service of miscreants as part of measures aimed to bring standards of international practices towards winning the confidence of the people.

It further cautioned personnel across the country to live above reproach as the service will apply stringent sanctions to persons caught engaging in acts that seek tarnish the image of the service.
