Accra, May 6, GNA – The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDco) on Wednesday began an exercise to replace a 33 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA) transformer at the Achimota sub-station in Accra to improve electricity supply in Accra and its environs.

The 33MVA transformer is being replaced with a 66 MVA transformer, which has been serving the metropolis since 1965. The 33MVA had developed faults resulting in the current intermittent power supply facing Accra and its environs.

The exercise, which will last for months, apart from improving electricity supply, is also to satisfy the increasing demand for electricity power in the Accra metropolis.

During a tour of the facility to see how work was progressing Mr Albert Quainoo, Head of Public Relations at GRIDco, told journalists that because of the exercise, seven per cent of power supplied to Accra had been suspended resulting in load shedding which began from May 4.

Mr Quainoo said GRIDco observed that 12 per cent of power produced was being wasted by consumers and called on them to conserve power to save cost.

He assured customers of efficient power supply when the exercise is completed.
