Barclays Select Team For UK Tournament

BARCLAYS Bank Ghana (BBG) Limited, have stepped up preparations ahead of their debut appearance in the Barclays Premier League Global 5-aside soccer tournament held annually in the United Kingdom.

This year’s event comes off at the home of English Premiership side New-castle United on May 17, and the BBG is determined to leave a huge landmark on the tournament at St. James’ Park.

After the staging of its own version of the tourney at the Ridge School Park on May Day, 11 players have been selected to begin preparation for the event which will be competed for by teams from the UK and from the rest of the world.

Six teams from the various departments of the bank took part in the tourney for selection held on May Day, with Scheme Loans from the Retail Department emerging tops. They defeated Cash Passport from the Operations Department 2-1 in the final.

The players selected, have stepped up preparations for the UK tournament which for the first time, will see the number of overseas teams increased from 10 to 12 to ensure greater participation from outside the UK.

Already, about 300 teams from the UK have played their preliminary games and the top 12 teams are putting finishing touches to their preparations hoping to deny their overseas counterparts any chances of returning home with any silverware.

Newcastle United legend, Peter Beardsley, will be on hand to present the tournament winners with their trophy. Participants will also have an opportunity of a photo session with the Barclays Premier League trophy.

Managing Director of BBG, Mrs Margaret Mwanakatwe, has said that her outfit is keen on making a huge impact at the finals to prove to their colleagues across the globe that soccer is really the passion of Ghana.
